Ear Training – Relative Pitch Training

I’ve been listening to the David Lucas Burge Relative Pitch Supercourse for about 30 minutes per day for about 3 months. I’m much better at recognizing intervals and I’ve realized the importance of learning the intervals ascending as well as descending. As far as guitar playing goes it has become easier for me to listen to a song and then play it. I can also think of a song in my head and imitate it on guitar or piano. Tuning the guitar by ear has become easier and the interval training has helped my all around musicianship. I’m currently working on the drills for Level 3 in the course.

I still recognize the intervals by relating them to songs like “twinkle twinkle” or “somewhere over the rainbow”. Burge doesn’t really recommend this method. His thought is to drill you so much that you don’t have to think of a song in order to recognize an interval. I’d have to agree. I plan to learn the intervals so well that I can recognize them ascending and descending at very high speeds.
